Generate Lecture Notes from Any YouTube Video

Every student eventually discovers the trade-off nobody warns you about. You can write good notes, or you can follow the argument. Doing both at once is genuinely difficult, and the moments where you stop writing to actually think are exactly the moments that go missing from your notes.

So you end up with a page that captures the first eight minutes in careful detail, degrades into fragments around minute twenty, and stops entirely at the part where the lecturer said something that made everything click.

The trade you are actually making

Generated notes are more complete than yours. They are also worse for memory, and it is worth being honest about why.

Writing notes by hand does something to the material on the way through. You paraphrase, you decide what matters, you compress — and that processing is a large part of why note-taking helps at all. Reading a generated document skips every bit of that. You end up with a better record and a weaker memory.

The way to come out ahead is to be deliberate about it: let the tool own the record so you can spend the lecture following the argument, then do the encoding on purpose afterwards with a quiz or Q&A pairs. Ten minutes of retrieval practice replaces the processing you skipped, and does it better than transcription would have.

Where it obviously wins

Lectures you missed. Illness, timetable clashes, the 9am after a night shift. A recording plus generated notes gets you a usable version of a session you were not in.

Rewatching before an exam. In week eleven, "rewatch the lecture" costs fifty minutes. Reading its notes costs five, and you can do it on a train.

Dense technical material. Modules where you are trying to write down a derivation and understand it simultaneously are the worst case for manual notes and the best case for generated ones.

Accessibility. If you process written material more easily than spoken — or you need a version you can read at your own pace, resize, or run through a screen reader — a text version of every lecture is not a convenience, it is access.

Second-language study. Following a lecture in a language you are still learning consumes most of your attention. Notes in your first language, via translation across 70+ languages, let you follow the ideas rather than the vocabulary.

The honest caveats

Auto-captions mishear technical vocabulary. In a chemistry or statistics lecture, that means the terms you most need are the ones most likely to be wrong. Skim for anything that reads oddly and check it against the recording.

And notes come from what was said, not what was written on the board. A lecturer who works through a proof in silence while saying "and then this follows" produces a transcript with almost nothing in it. Those lectures still have to be watched — the notes will tell you honestly that there was not much to extract.
